An annual eye exam is an important component of your all-over preventive health care. The eye doctor will examine your eyes, order tests, and diagnose any vision abnormalities that require attention. They’ll also make sure you aren’t suffering from a condition like glaucoma or macular degeneration, which can have drastic effects on the quality of your vision if left untreated.

The American Optometric Association recommends that adults get a comprehensive eye exam every one to two years. Children should also visit an eye doctor at least once every year from birth through age five and then annually through age 18.

  • Visual acuity test: measures your visual sharpness, or ability to see at varying distances
  • Refraction: determines the appropriate lens power for your eyeglasses prescription
  • Slit lamp examination: close examination of the surface of your eye and structures behind it
  • Tonometry: measures the pressure inside your eyeball
  • Pupil dilation: dilates (makes larger) the pupils in both eyes in order to examine the back part of each eye
